This is a post about my journey from my daughter's house to Brasstown, NC. Since I haven't had internet access for several days, I'll catch you up on those travels now.
On Thursday the 26th I left my daughter's home in Winfield, MD on my way to Hawk campground (Federal Forest Campground). I was so anxious to get on the road because I had been delayed 3 days trying to finish up a Native American Dance Regalia order. I should have spent a few more minutes checking the actual driving directions before I left her home but I'd seen them several times already and thought I knew the way..
As it was I ended up East of Winchester, VA trying to get the directions on my iphone but it was trying to send me a direction I hadn't seen before, so I thought that I'd check the freecampsites.net website and even though I was able to pull up the website, their advertisement about their new RV dumps website was in the way and I couldn't get the info I needed to put into Mapquest.com.
So, I called my friend and he helped me by sending the direction to my phone. (Thank you my friend!!!)
It was at that point that I really wished I had a map or book to give directions!!! Technology was of no help, except when I was able to call my friend and he was able to help me.
I ended up getting to the Hawk campground about 5pm. I was the only one there and I'm still trying to get over the uneasiness of being along in a big ole forest. About dusk another single lady arrived and camped a few spaces down from mine. She left early the next morning so I don't know if she was in a tent or using her Prius as an RV like my friend, Suanne Carlson does.
I slept well, few mosquitoes, an overall good camping event. The road was well maintained gravel, all 17 miles of it. Yeppers, it was 17 miles from the nearest paved road. But its a logging road so its pretty well maintained for the loggers.
The top photo shows the fire ring.
The bottom photo shows how wide the sites are, plus look at the gorgeous greens in those trees!!!.

Slow Mosey 2011
On May 5 I will begin my slow mosey to the East Coast. I currently live in Oklahoma and recently my family dynamic has changed and I'm now able to travel at will. I inherited 2 houses and need to finish fixing them up and listing them for sale. Once they listed, I have to be out within 30 days. This means I also have to sell everything that isn't going into storage or into the RV that I will be buying at that time before the houses are listed.
I still have a lot of work orders to complete for my customers and so I really don't anticipate having all that much time and money to travel and I am trying to work out part time teaching jobs in various parts of the country.
I had my first of 2 or 3 garage sales last weekend and it did pretty well. I actually hate having garage sales but there were a lot of little things that needed to be sold that wouldn't be worthy of my etsy shop or my website. And, the biggest hit was the blue tarp I put down on the ground and told everyone that stopped by that whatever was on the tarp was FREE. Yep, got rid of a lot of things that I didn't think would sell - you know - single plates, scratched or chipped nick nacks - that kind of thing.
After I get the houses sold, I plan to travel/live in an RV for at least 6 years. While traveling, I intend to travel frugally but still enjoy all the wonders of this great country. I plan on boondocking in National Forests and State Parks.
This blog is about documenting the slow moseys beginning with this first one of 2011 (I've taken this trip 2 x in 2010 - sleeping in my car in rest stops on the way to the East Coast and back much to the horror of some of my family members) and to document the process of turning my 1997 Camry into a travel mobile - sometimes crash pad - camping equipment transporter. I will take several long trips, sometimes of several days to a few weeks until the houses sell.
I hope you enjoy taking a slow, leasurly mosey with me. I welcome your comments and hope to pass you moseying down the road on your own adventure.
